Troop 226 had a fantabulous month! At the Feeding San Diego service Sept. 20 we were assigned to sorting onions and cleaning the moldy ones. We were singing songs while our eyes teared up from the onions! As one of the adult leads said, “We had cheers with tears.” We even had a competition for who could clean onions and empty out a bag the fastest! We went through 1,000 lbs. of onions which would be used to serve some 333 families!
On Sept. 13 we had a Court of Honor. A Court of Honor is a way of recognizing and acknowledging Scouts’ personal work. We went through the ranks, recognizing each Scout. We had two Masters of Ceremony who worked with our Scoutmaster, Chaplains Aid and historian on the event and three Scouts in charge of a flag ceremony.
For our campout of the month, Sept. 1-3 we went to Mataguay Scout Ranch where we had six Scouts and three adults participate in the Rifle Shooting Merit Badge. During this campout, the Scouts learned how to safely operate and clean a rifle. After many struggles, everyone earned the merit badge. The rest of the campout was filled with eating cheese balls and having the best shadow-puppet show ever.
After learning about Rifle Shooting, we had a few Scouts and adults interested in Shotgun Shooting. One of the Scouts said, “We are going to shoot at least 50 rounds and try to break 12 in 25 clay birds with a shotgun, twice, shooting a round at a time. This is to imitate hunting real birds.”
As for future events, we are going to Webelos Woods. A Webelos is the last rank in Cub Scouts. After Cub Scouts, is Boy Scouts of America. Webelos Woods is a way for troops to encourage Webelos to join their troop. Troops can play games and even hang out with the Webelos to give them an idea of which troop they may want to join. Coming up soon, we also have a backpacking trip in Santa Isabel with a group of Scouts and adults trying to get their Scuba Certification!
